Multi-Species Amazon Fishing Adventures

Payara Fishing

Not all Amazon fishing trips are about peacock bass. Some are about something broader—something wilder. Acute Angling’s multi-species expeditions open the door to a different kind of Amazon experience: one that blends intense fishing action with a deep immersion into the jungle itself. These trips focus on a variety of powerful predators, including the fierce payara, massive Amazon catfish, sharp-toothed black piranha, and other exciting species like wolfish, bicuda, and matrinxã. It’s fishing at its most unpredictable—and most exciting.

At the center of it all is the payara, a razor-fanged predator that strikes with shocking speed and puts up aerial battles that test even the most experienced anglers. Beneath the surface, enormous redtail catfish, jau, and elusive piraíba haunt the river bottom, offering deep, grinding fights that demand strength, patience, and endurance. Between these giants, the river remains alive with aggressive secondary species, providing action from the first cast to the last.

Payara & Multi-Species Focused Trips

Rio Aripuana

Variety, Action, and Jungle Beauty

This remote river delivers a high-action mix of payara, giant catfish, bicuda, Pinima peacock bass, and other species, in a setting that's both pristine and productive. Anglers stay in a comfortable jungle lodge with air-conditioned cabanas and enjoy six full days of non-stop fishing in rich, protected waters.

XINGU RIVER

Remote Fishing with Cultural Connection

Set in the Kayapo indigenous reserve, the Xingu trip blends great multi-species fishing with a chance to engage with one of the Amazon’s native communities. You'll catch payara, giant catfish, Melaniae peacock bass, and more while experiencing an unforgettable cultural exchange in one of the most remote places we go.

What truly sets these trips apart is the setting. You’ll fish in some of the Amazon’s most untouched and remote regions—where the jungle hums with life and every day brings incredible encounters. Monkeys call from the treetops, giant river otters slide along the banks, and macaws, toucans, and capybaras are common sights. Lucky anglers might even spot a tapir crossing a sandbar—or catch a glimpse of a jaguar in the early morning light. These trips don’t just feel like the Amazon—they are the Amazon, in all its raw beauty and intensity.

Our multi-species trips are timed to maximize the opportunities of catching the biggest variety in fish species. With expert guides, comfortable accommodations, and seamless logistics, you’ll be in the right place at the right time—ready to experience the jungle’s fiercest fishing in an atmosphere that’s both wild and welcoming.

Travel, Trip, and Evacuation Insurance; Don't Leave Home Without It

Understanding Evacuation, Travel, & Flight Insurance for Your Amazon Adventure

Every year, we send anglers deep into the Amazon—after trophy peacock bass, Amazon river catfish, and the kind of unforgettable experiences you can’t find anywhere else. These trips are incredible, and they’re also remote, international, and not without risk.

That’s why one of the most important pieces of pre-trip advice we give our anglers is this:

Get insured. Not just any insurance. The right combination of evacuation and travel coverage.

We don’t require it, but we can’t recommend it strongly enough. Here’s why.

Why Evacuation Coverage Isn’t Just a Bonus—It’s a Lifeline

Let’s say you’re out on the water, a couple hundred miles into the rainforest, and something goes wrong—a broken leg, a serious illness, a major injury. You need to get out fast and get home. That’s not a simple matter when you’re fishing in the Amazon rainforest.

This is where Global Rescue comes in. They do exactly what their name says—they rescue. We have worked with them for years to provide our clients with medical, security, travel risk, and crisis response services. Their medical evacuation coverage doesn’t reimburse you after the fact. They actually send a team. Field rescue, air transport, 24/7 access to real doctors. No deductibles. No fine print about how far from home you are or what you were doing when it happened. Whether you’re battling giant peacock bass or hiking through jungle terrain, they’ve got you covered.

It’s not technically “insurance”—it’s a membership—and it gives you real-time help when you need it most. And in a place like the Amazon, that could mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and a full-blown crisis.

Global Rescue FAQ:

What happens if I’m injured or have an emergency requiring evacuation?

Every situation is different when medical and security emergencies happen. To ensure you’re protected when things don’t go as planned, we highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue.

What is included in the Global Rescue medical membership?

The Global Rescue medical membership includes 24/7/365 advisory services with medical professionals, field rescue from the point of illness or injury and medical evacuation to the member’s hospital of choice.

Are there any limitations on my activities with a Global Rescue medical membership?

No. Global Rescue does not put limitations on activities.

What is included in the Global Rescue security membership?

The Global Rescue security membership includes 24/7/365 advisory services and security evacuation from events like unpredicted natural disasters, terrorist attacks and civil unrest— all supported by a team of intelligence specialists and military special operations veterans.

Trip Insurance vs. Travel Insurance: What’s the Difference?

These two terms get tossed around a lot—and sometimes even used interchangeably—but they’re not exactly the same.

Trip insurance (also called “trip cancellation” insurance) is focused on protecting your investment before the trip even begins. Say you’ve paid in full for your Amazon trip, booked your flights, and reserved a hotel—and then a family emergency forces you to cancel. If you have trip insurance, you can be reimbursed for non-refundable costs. That’s its main job.

Travel insurance, on the other hand, is more comprehensive. It includes trip cancellation, but also covers things like:

  • Trip interruption (if you have to cut your trip short)

  • Emergency medical expenses while abroad

  • Evacuation (though often through reimbursements and with coverage caps)

  • Baggage loss or delay

  • Trip delays, missed connections, and even rental car damage

It’s broader and typically more expensive—but for a high-value, remote trip like fishing in South America, it’s absolutely worth it.

Understanding CFAR and IFAR: Flexibility When You Need It Most

Some anglers want even more flexibility—especially those booking far in advance or traveling with unpredictable schedules. That’s where Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) and Interruption For Any Reason (IFAR) coverage come in.

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR)

CFAR lets you cancel your trip for any reason, not just those specifically listed in a standard policy. Didn’t like the weather forecast? Changed your mind? Decided to postpone until next year? CFAR has you covered.

What it covers:

  • Reimburses up to 100% of your trip cost for covered reasons

  • Reimburses up to 75% of your trip cost for reasons outside of the covered reasons

  • Typically adds 40%–60% to your policy price

  • Must be purchased within 20 days of your initial trip deposit

  • You must cancel at least 48 hours before departure

  • You must insure all non-refundable trip costs within 20 days of incurring them

So, for a $7,000 Amazon fishing trip, CFAR could return up to $5,250, even if your reason for canceling isn’t covered under standard terms.

Interruption For Any Reason (IFAR)

IFAR is similar, but kicks in after your trip starts. Say you arrive in Brazil, but something unexpected back home requires you to cut your trip short. IFAR allows you to return home and still get partial reimbursement.

What it covers:

  • Typically reimburses up to 75% of your remaining trip costs for non-covered reasons

  • Must be purchased as an add-on, often within the same 20- day window

Both CFAR and IFAR are optional but powerful tools for anglers who value maximum flexibility.

What About Flight Insurance?

Flight insurance is usually sold during airline bookings and only covers a narrow slice—like accidental death during a flight or minimal compensation for delays. It’s inexpensive, but it doesn’t do much.

Instead, we recommend that you fold flight coverage into a comprehensive travel insurance plan. These typically include delay reimbursement, lost baggage, and missed connections—alongside medical and trip cancellation coverage.

So What Should You Get?

We recommend two layers of protection:

  1. A Global Rescue membership — This handles emergency evacuations, medical consultations, and even security issues like natural disasters or civil unrest. It’s not a reimbursement—it’s a rescue.

  2. Comprehensive travel insurance — IMG (offered via Global Rescue), or another trusted provider. These policies handle cancellations, interruptions, baggage issues, medical costs, and more.

And if you’re looking for maximum flexibility, add CFAR or IFAR to your plan.

Mini FAQ: What Anglers Ask Us Most

Is this something I really need?

Yes! We believe that it is not worth the risk of being stuck paying for an emergency flight out of the Amazon or worrying about protecting the cost of your trip. We highly recommend evacuation and trip insurance.

Acute Angling Trip

What about pre-existing conditions?

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies can cover pre-existing medical conditions—but only if you purchase the plan within 20 days of your initial deposit. After that window, those conditions may be excluded.

How far in advance do I need to buy CFAR?

You typically need to purchase CFAR within 20 days of making your first payment toward the trip (like your deposit). If you wait longer, it’s usually no longer available.

Does Global Rescue cover COVID-related issues?

Yes. Global Rescue offers COVID-19 field rescue and transport under their membership services.

Can I use my credit card travel coverage instead?

Some cards offer limited protection, but they rarely include the emergency evacuation, medical coverage, or trip flexibility you need for an expedition in the Amazon. We recommend a stand-alone policy every time.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, you’re not going to the Ritz—you’re heading deep into the heart of the jungle, chasing big peacock bass, giant Amazon catfish, payara, and more, creating the kind of fishing stories that last a lifetime. It’s worth protecting.
